IT company CROC has been recognized as a Bronze Stevie Award winner at the 2020 International Business Awards within the ‘COVID-19 Response’ category for the ‘Most Valuable Technical Innovation’. CROC’s award-winning collaboration with the Garage Museum* allowed the Atelier E.B: Passer-by exhibition be digitized and fully available to art lovers worldwide during the pandemic. Although the museum has returned to normal after lockdown, the digitized exhibition keeps generating interest and has been seen by 8,755 people so far.
On March 14, the pandemic forced the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art to operate online only and posed the challenge of adapting exhibition projects to the new reality, with CROC MarTech Lab, a business unit of IT company CROC, giving a helping hand to the museum team. Through effective teamwork and shared expertise, a digital version of the project was created containing artworks, explanatory texts, and videos available online.
The exhibition’s virtual panorama provides analytical tools to calculate the number of unique expo visitors and identify exhibits of particular interest, as well as visitor categories that interact most with the panorama. Staff can analyze these metrics to learn more about the museum’s online audience and tailor processes to their needs.Although Moscow’s lockdown is now over, the virtual exhibition continues to attract citizens of other countries still unable to visit Russian museums. Stevie® Awards judges recognized the project as one of the most valuable technical innovations during the pandemic.
This unique collaboration between IT company CROC and the Garage Museum demonstrates that technology and art together have the power to overcome unprecedented challenges. Thanks to this project, the museum could keep working even under lockdown, allowing people to explore new exhibitions without leaving their homes. Although closed physically, the digital exhibition helped the Garage Museum keep in touch with its audience. I am sure that creative industries are coming into a new era, and we are proud to be part of the digital transformation of art.Elena Volkovskaya

* Founded in 2008 by Dasha Zhukova and Roman Abramovich, Garage is the first philanthropic institution in Russia to create a comprehensive public mandate for contemporary art. Providing opportunities for dialogue, as well as the production of new work and ideas, the Museum’s extensive program of exhibitions, events, education, research, and publishing reflects current developments in Russian and international culture. Central to these activities is the Museum’s collection, which is the only public archive in the country related to the development of Russian contemporary art from the 1950s through to the present.
